How Your Birthday Was Celebrated Growing Up Has Gone Viral But There Is A Gray Area
How your birthday was celebrated growing up has gone viral but there is a gray area for me. A TikToker known as @thesam_show recently went viral when she talked about how her family celebrated her birthday when she was growing up. After watching it I realized I had friends whose birthdays were celebrated the same way. Mine, however, were a bit different but it’s more of a gray area and I know I’m not alone.
How Birthday Families Celebrate
In the video, the TikTocker describes what her birthdays were like growing up. This was the case for some of my friends too. From the moment you open your eyes in the morning to the moment you go to sleep, the day is all about you. It’s literally an all-day birthday celebration. Balloons, decorations, and accessories surround you everywhere you go. You get to eat, drink, and do anything you want while also shouting that it’s your birthday. If I had to guess, it probably drives non-birthday families crazy.
How Non-Birthday Families Celebrate
It’s not like a non-birthday family doesn’t really celebrate a birthday. They just don’t make it as big of a spectacle. It might be presents and a cake after a dinner out or an outing to the movie theatre or entertainment complex. After discovering that this has become a viral topic I realized something. My birthday and my wife’s birthday fall in a gray area. Both of our birthdays equally surround Christmas and based on that, I can tell you that my birthday wasn’t a spectacle.
The Birthday Gray Area
My birthday is January 8th. It’s exactly two weeks after Christmas and exactly one week after New Year’s Day. I also share it with a very famous singer and performer. I’ve always had to compete with following up the two biggest parties of the year. I would still get a couple of presents with a cake or a giant cookie. It’s still tough to get anybody to want to do anything on my birthday, but it’s only because everyone’s exhausted. Now that I’m older, I’m fine with sipping a favorite bourbon and calling that my birthday. How your birthday was celebrated growing up has gone viral but there is a gray area for me.
