Victoria Beckham Says Beyoncé Was ‘Inspired’ By The Spice Girls
Victoria Beckham says that the Spice Girls’ influenced Beyoncé into the iconic artist she has become today, Daily Mail reports.
Beckham, aka Posh Spice, revealed the band’s message of “Girl Power” really resonated with Beyoncé, who told her about the impact they’d had. She said, “I met Beyoncé a few years ago, and she actually said to me, ‘It was the Spice Girls that inspired me and made me want to do what I do and made me proud to be a girl and proud to be who I am.’ And when someone like Beyoncé, who is so iconic and was such a strong woman, says that she was inspired by the Spice Girls, I think that’s quite something.”
The Spice Girls shot to fame in 1996, then split up in 2000. The former girl group has briefly reunited over the years, although Beckham decided to not join them for their most recent 2019 tour.
Talking about her time in the girl group, 47-year-old Beckham joked that her four children often comment on how “cool” she used to be, to which she realized, “Oh, wow. Does that mean I’m not now?” When reflecting on her past makeup looks, Beckham says people always ask if she cringes at any of her old photos. “Do I cringe at that heavy lip liner?” the fashion designer asked. “No, it was, it was a journey. Do I cringe at those skinny eyebrows? No, it was a journey and way too much blush, you know, we were working so hard and we were so exhausted. There was a time where we were in a different country every few days. And the more and more tired that we got, the more and more blusher that we put on.”
Beckham joked that they even used to get told off by their makeup artists at the time, as they would go on stage with an “entire palette” on their faces. She said, “Our makeup artists used to say: ‘Now I’m going to be the blusher police.'” She went on to say that “the more tired you are, you feel more awake if you have more blush and more lip gloss.”
Beckham reflected on the happier times within The Spice Girls: “I look at us all and it makes me smile because, you know, we didn’t care. We wore what made us feel good. And we weren’t worried if this the newest, coolest, and we set trends because there was no fear. You know, knowing what I know now, when I have the nerve or the guts to go on stage in a PVC catsuit. Absolutely not, but back then it was okay. And that was great.”
The Spice Girls was always about “accepting who you are” and that it was “okay to be different,” a message which inspired Beyoncé, Posh Spice said. “Let’s not try and change who we are. Let’s celebrate who we are. Let’s celebrate the fact that we’re all different, which is why inclusivity is so important to us, you know, I mean, when we talk about Spice Girls. I don’t talk about it that much anymore, but what I remembered as you were just talking to me about it and how we inspired lots of young women.”
