Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande won two of the major pop music GRAMMYs during the pre-show telecast Sunday night.
Lady Gaga took home the Best Pop Solo Performance award for “Joanne (Where Do You Think You’re Goin’?).” No doubt it was an exciting moment for the singer to win an award separate from her work in A Star Is Born.
“A Grammy for Joanne is more than me & my family could ever dream of,” she Tweeted. “I sang that version in one take & poured my entire life & soul into it. Thank you so much for this gift I am completely shocked. 2nd Grammy win of the night I am so overwhelmed by this kindness.”
Earlier today, she also won the award for Best Song Written for Visual Media for “Shallow,” the title track from A Star Is Born. “Shallow” is also nominated for Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.”
Gaga is expected to perform the song at tonight’s broadcast but without Bradley Cooper, who is representing for A Star Is Born at the BAFTAs in London, where the film won an award for best original score.
Meanwhile, despite the drama surrounding her canceled performance this week, Ariana Grande won a top award during the pre-show as well. Her album Sweetener scored the award for Best Pop Vocal album.
Last week, Grande publicly criticized GRAMMYs producer Ken Ehrlich for “lying” on her, saying the reason she canceled her performance was due to a conflict over her creative choices, not due to a lack of preparation.
The 61st annual GRAMMYs air on CBS at 8pm ET/5pm PT.
