Demi Lovato To Make Emo Music Next, But Is Too Happy
Demi Lovato’s emo era is here to stay. The 30-year-old singer shared that she is going back to her rock roots with new music but finds a problem: she is too happy. Lovato has been in a relationship with fellow musician Jute$ since August.
She finds her happier lifestyle may make the lyrics challenging. “I definitely am in a really good place,” she said during a segment on CBS Mornings. “I don’t know what I’m going to write about on my next album because I’m so happy. It is a really good feeling, but I don’t know what I’m going to do.”
Despite that, the singer says love will be one of the themes she will be exploring. “Def a bunch of sappy love songs for sure,” she added.
Elsewhere in the feature, Lovato says she “grew up listening to this music. And so I wanted to go back to my roots. Whether you’re going through depression or you’re having fun with your friends, there’s so many emotions that’s in this music. I think that this generation is hungry for it.”
Lovato said that emo music has something for everyone. “Whether it was angst, whether it’s falling in love, sadness, I always made music to become an inspiration to other people while also doing what I love,” she said.

For those who don’t know, emo bands emerged in the late ’90s and reached their peak around 2012. Bands like Panic! At The Disco, Paramore, Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance and A Day To Remember are just some of the bands who took over the alt-rock genre. From sappy acoustic to upbeat songs, the genre did indeed have something for everybody and dominated rock radio. The subgenre has had solid staying power, as proven by Lovato’s decision to record an emo album. But there’s a whole wave of nostalgia behind it. The When We Were Young festival features a lot of the biggest bands of the era.
Recently, Lovato re-recorded a rock version of her 2013 track “Heart Attack.”
