The States With The Longest Work Commutes
Do you hate that morning commute to work or school? Think your commute to work is bad? Depending on where you live, rush hour traffic can take forever, but some places definitely have it worse than others. Fortunately for those like me who work way before most of you are even up, my commute is not that bad. I get to enjoy a smooth drive (for the most part) with empty roads and a dark sky. But, when it’s time to leave the studio, I finally see the rest of you out there. And let’s not even start talking about that school traffic when it’s time to take kids or pick them up… YIKES!
According to the NY Post, in a new report from the U.S. Department of Energy has just come out revealing which states have the longest commutes.
- The DOE’s research uses 2022 data to determine the average one-way travel time to work in each state.
- The average commute time across the country is 27 minutes one-way.
- Unsurprisingly, New York is the state with the longest commute time in the country, at an average of 33.2 minutes.
- Maryland, New Jersey and Washington, D.C. aren’t far behind, with an average one-way work commute of just over 30 minutes.
- According to the DOE, that’s because of “traffic and urban sprawl.”
- Workers in the midwest have it pretty good, commutes in Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska and Montana all average slightly less than 20 minutes.
- The states with the fastest commute times are North Dakota and South Dakota, where workers spend an average of just under 18 minutes to get to work.
