Spring Break Travel – Where NOT To Go
According to Fox News, the U.S. State Department is warning tourists about traveling to towns along Mexico’s Caribbean coast. So, when it comes to Spring Break travel… you might want to avoid Cancun!
The warning is in regard to clashes between taxi drivers and ride-share customers and drivers. There have been incidents where taxi drivers in Quintana Roo state (home to Cancun and other popular tourist spots), are harassing and attacking both the drivers and passengers in Uber vehicles. It seems competition from the ride-share service has led to turmoil.
On Monday, taxi drivers blocked a main road leading toward many hotels in Cancun. As a result, some tourists had to walk or ride in police pickup trucks to the airport.
The U.S. State Department warns travelers that past disputes of this nature have been known to turn violent. Videos have been surfacing on social media of tourists being harassed by taxi drivers.
Ana Patricia Peralta, the mayor of Cancun, has asked the drivers to show restraint. She doesn’t want the small group to damage the reputation of the area, or put anyone in danger.
What led to the uprising? There was a January 11th court ruling that allows Uber to operate without a public transport license. But that transport license is a requirement for taxis.
So, when it comes to Spring Break travel, Cancun may not be the place for you this year. If you’re looking for places a little closer to home, and perhaps a bit safer, check out these great places close by!
