A South Carolina Man Created The World’s New Hottest Pepper
A South Carolina man created the world’s new hottest pepper and Guinness World Records certified it immediately. The man’s name is Ed Currie and he actually owns a pepper company called the PuckerButt Pepper Company. I’m a fan of spicy foods, but there’s no way I’d go anywhere near this pepper. Especially after watching these guys eat the “Pepper X.”
What Sets The Pepper Apart?
What sets Pepper X apart is its extraordinary Scoville Heat Unit, or SHU, rating. This rating measures the spiciness of chili peppers. Ed Currie’s scorching pepper has been recorded at an average of 2.69 million SHU, which means it’s the only pepper hotter than the Carolina Reaper which previously held the record.
Compared To Other Peppers
If Pepper X is at 2.69 million SHU, it’s a full million units hotter than the Carolina Reaper which measured at 1.6 million SHU when it was recorded as the world’s hottest pepper. Just to compare that to more of an everyday pepper we might eat, a jalapeno is only 2,500 to 10,000 on the Scoville scale. How many times has it felt like you’re head was going to launch off of your body after eating some of those jalapeno seeds?
It’s So Hot You Can’t Buy It
According to his website, the actual pepper isn’t available for purchase. Neither the seeds nor the plants are available, but hot sauces with Pepper X added to them are! You can check those out here! They run anywhere from $8.00 to $25.00 and I assume they will make you react like the name of his company.
It Was Recently Featured On Hot Ones
One of my favorite shows to watch is Hot Ones on YouTube. Sean Evans interviews celebrities while they eat wings with really hot sauces. Sean, Ed, and two other guys decided to each eat a Pepper X at the same time on the show and they looked like they were suffering! A South Carolina man created the world’s new hottest pepper and you can see the Guinness World Record certificate and the video of the guys eating the pepper below!
