Local Artists Yarn Bombing Downtown Augusta is Giving the Streets a Vibrant Look
With Arts and the Heart of Augusta making a return this weekend, September 15 -17, local crochet and knit artists are yarn bombing Downtown Augusta.
Yarn Artists from across the CSRA are creating colorful and intricate public yarn installations for all to enjoy on the trees of the 600 block. This is also where the Family Area of the Arts in the Heart Festival will be located.
This project was organized by Erica Pastecki and Heather Dunaway – two managers of the Family Area.
“It all turned out fantastic – it was a real group effort!,” the managers stated.
What is Yarn Bombing?
Yarn bombing is a type of graffiti and an ever-growing street art movement. Yarn bombing consists of covering or wrapping objects in pieces of knit or crochet.
While anything can be yarn bombed such as fences, street sign poles, lights poles, and more, yarn artists are taking over the Downtown Augusta trees.
A lot of times when you think of street art, you think of permanent things like paintings. But yarn bombing is an impermeant way of bringing a new look to an area while easily being able to remove it.
Each tree has a different yarn design. The tree above was designed by The Crochet Fairy. It is the Butterfly Tree. The tree is located directly across from the 600 building on Broad Street.
The album included above shows off tons of trees that have been “yarn bombed” along Downtown Augusta.
