Another Dollar General In North Augusta
I’m not sure who is it that looks at a piece of property and says, “You know what we need to put there? Another Dollar General!” But I have to say, they will put one just about anywhere. And sometimes they pop up in the most random spots. Now there’s another Dollar General coming to North Augusta.
Building Plans For Dollar General In North Augusta
Truth is, the new Dollar General is really close to where I live. So I knew a while before they ever broke ground that the store was coming. A lot of people in my neighborhood aren’t too thrilled about this new store coming either. Unfortunately, I didn’t attend the meeting where the plans were discussed. I don’t really know how those things work, but I do wish more of us had some way to speak up against it.
The new Dollar General is going in on Edgefield Road, at the corner of Trailside Drive. Technically, this is Edgefield County, but still considered North Augusta. They’ve started building it, but I can’t quite tell which road the front of the store will face. Also, this location is around 2 1/2 miles from another Dollar General (195 Market Place Drive, near the North Augusta Food Lion). And there’s another store about 6 miles the other way at 2494 Edgefield Road in Trenton.
I am concerned for a few reasons. But the main one is… that area is already dangerous when it comes to traffic. There’s no traffic light, and when school is in session, there’s a lot of traffic around Fox Creek High School. The school isn’t far at all from the new store. Also, the angle coming from either Trailside Drive or Short Cut Road isn’t a straight shot across, and many don’t pull to the median on Edgefield Road in the right way. There have been accidents there, because it can often be hard to see when cars are on the wrong side at the turn there.
Shopping At Dollar General
Will I shop at this new Dollar General, that will be less than 2 miles from my house? Maybe. And I think my neighbors that aren’t thrilled about it will probably use it too. I don’t frequent Dollar General, but have been known to swing in there when I’ve needed something like a gift bag or card. Sometimes it is easier to swing in a store like that, versus battling the crowd at Walmart to pick up just a few items.
And if I’m being honest, I probably will stop at this one more than I think I will. Because it will be so incredibly convenient. It still doesn’t mean I’m happy about where they decided to put it!
Dollar General Stores Everywhere
I was thinking about it the other day. Dollar General stores pop up everywhere. They are becoming like Waffle House restaurants in the South! You know what I’m talking about. Waffle House is everywhere! And sometimes there are 2 of them on either side of an exit off of the interstate.
I know Waffle House has to be profitable with their plans to put restaurants so close together. Otherwise, I don’t think they’d keep doing it. So it makes me wonder just how profitable is a Dollar General? It has to be pretty decent, I would think. And maybe the startup cost isn’t bad either.
Also, I just looked it up, and our friends across the river in Georgia have a lot of Dollar General stores. Georgia is actually the second state with the most DG stores. Texas leads with 1,828 stores… which is a store for every 15,862 people. Georgia has slightly less than Texas, but also it’s a smaller state. There are 1,071 DG stores in Georgia. That’s a store for every 9,913 people.
As of 2023, South Carolina has 644 locations, according to Statista. But add in the new Dollar General in North Augusta… that’s at least 645 now. In reality, there are probably quite a few more stores that have been built in South Carolina in the past year though!
Overall, Dollar General has 19,770 locations across 48 states and territories. There aren’t any in Hawaii or Alaska, as well as none in 6 territories, including the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Building Progress On New Dollar General In North Augusta
I’ve been watching the work on this new store near my neighborhood. Even this morning at 4 a.m. they had a crew out there doing some sort of work. If the rain would hold off, I have a feeling they’d make a lot more progress on the building. As for now, they’ve cleared and leveled out the land, and the slab is down. If it’s anything like the Chick-fil-A they recently built at Exit 5 in North Augusta, we’ll blink and they’ll be open for business!
This new store isn’t the only growth coming to North Augusta though. Check out what’s coming next to the QuikTrip off Exit 5.
