Burke County Veterinarian Gets Local Support
Dr. Emily Martin is a Burke County veterinarian who is well-known and loved in the Augusta area. She has been helping sick and injured pets in the area for many years. Previously, she was highlighted back in 2018 for helping save a dog named Taka, who had suffered severe burns from a house fire. But now, Dr. Martin is in need of healing.
Burke County Veterinarian Attacked
In a post on Facebook, a co-worker of Dr. Martin explained they were attempting to sedate a dog. They were aware the dog had aggressive tendencies. The dog was scheduled to have surgery on Friday morning, and Dr. Martin wanted to give him mild sedation to help settle him for the night.
The co-worker described the scene and the precautions they took leading up to the attack. They walked him on a long lead outside, so he wouldn’t feel trapped. And everything seemed to be fine. Dr. Martin then put a muzzle on the dog. As the co-worker attempted to administer the sedation, the muzzle came off.
Both Dr. Martin and her co-worker backed away from the dog when they realized what happened. Unfortunately, the dog did not, and attacked Dr. Martin from behind. The dog drug her down and mauled her. Another technician came out in an attempt to help. The first co-worker ran to a nearby table when the dog started coming at her. It was from there that she called 911.
Dr. Martin was rushed to the hospital with severe nerve damage to her right arm. She’s had surgery to reattach nerves and tendons in her arm. And she also had to have drain tubes in both legs.

The community is coming together to support the beloved veterinarian as she tries to recover. A group called Zeus’ Crusaders have started a fund to assist Dr. Martin during this terrible time.
