Tips to Keep Georgia Safe Over Memorial Day Weekend
Memorial Day weekend, the unofficial kickoff to summer, is right around the corner. Most schools have wrapped up the year. Those who work are getting that extra weekend day, so for many, this is a popular time to get the traveling started. Georgia officials and authorities are planning ahead for residents to stay safe this weekend.
The holiday period begins Friday, May 26, at 6:00 p.m., and ends Monday, May 29, at 11:59 p.m. During that period, Over 1.1 million Georgians are projected to take a road trip for Memorial Day.
Colonel Chris Wright, Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Public Safety, stated, “We want to ensure motorists make this Memorial Day weekend travel period as safe as possible.”
During the 2022 Memorial Day holiday, Troopers issued more than 10,200 citations, made more than 330 DUI arrests, and investigated nearly 400 crashes that resulted in over 240 injuries and 10 fatalities.
Tips to Stay Safe Over Memorial Day Weekend

- Wear your seatbelt. Everyone In the vehicle should have a seatbelt on.
- Observe the speed limit. Not only does this let you know your maximum limit on a certain roadway, but it helps ensure the amount of available time needed to avoid a traffic crash.
- Do not Drive Impaired. Before getting behind a motor vehicle, think twice. If you are not sober, designate a driver that is or look into a rideshare service to get you home safely.
- Pay attention to others around you. There will be cyclists, trucks, buses, and pedestrians that you will want to be aware of.
- Do not drive distracted. Keep clear of using hand-held cell phones while driving.
