Kathy Griffin Reveals She Has ‘Complex PTSD’, Had 8-Hour Attack
Kathy Griffin is opening up about how she handles her frequent panic and anxiety attacks on social media. Over the weekend, the 62-year-old comedian posted a TikTok video detailing the hours of pain she has experienced since being diagnosed with “complex PTSD.”
She shared with her 168.3K followers, “Since I’ve been talking on here about PTSD, I had a freaking 8-hour attack yesterday. Eight hours of freaking, writhing in pain in the bed.”

On Saturday (April 15), the D-List comedian “felt like one might be coming on. So I started to feel a little iffy,” she continued. “So, I’m on my walk now. I’m outside and looking at the ocean, which is helpful. And I’m sort of almost mid-anxiety attack right now. It feels good to be walking my way through it. I just keep telling myself it won’t last forever.”

Re-sharing the video on Instagram, Griffin detailed in the caption how she’s been “plagued with terrifying panic attacks” over the past year and a half. “Sometimes they last a few hours or more typically, they last at least a full day if not multiple days in a row,” she added. “I feel silly even telling you this, because I always thought PTSD was just for veterans and stuff. During my attacks, I typically vomit quite a bit and often have to go to the ER just to get IV fluids.”
The following day, Griffin admitted she doesn’t know what to expect with her diagnosis, calling it the “weirdest thing” to deal with. “My PTSD attacks me in the mornings. So every single morning, I wake up terrified to see if I’m gonna be okay or not,” she explained. “It hits me in my chest first. My chest starts to tingle, then it goes right to my stomach. Then it’s like, okay, am I gonna start vomiting today from anxiety or not.”
@kathygriffin Thank you to the response about my PTSD Anxiety PanicAttacks This is all this is new to me. My life definitely changed 5 1/2 years ago as you guys know, but this last year and a half has been plagued with PTSD stuff. it’s funny. I don’t have anxiety about performing, but I have anxiety about life. 😰

In another video, Griffin, with her hair unkept, says that she likes to put on makeup and get over-dressed for no reason. “Just getting ready gives me something to do,” she said. “I don’t have to wallow, or weird thoughts or anything like that.
@kathygriffin Hahaha. Yes, I will put make up on and get dressed up to go to a farmers market if it takes my mind off my #PanicAttacks #PTSD #Anxiety AnxietyAttacks. Feel free to laugh at the dress. It’s very little house on the prairie. Thanks a lot @@ralphlauren:)

The comedian first revealed her diagnosis last week. She assured her fans that although her symptoms are “extremely intense,” she has a lot of tools that can help her cope. “Let’s talk about PTSD. Never talked about it publicly,” Griffin began her video. “You can laugh or whatever, but I’ve been diagnosed with complex PTSD, and it’s called an extreme case.”
She recalled how it started for her in 2017, when Griffin posed with a bloodied replica head of former President Donald Trump. What followed was tons of backlash. She was fired from hosting gigs, investigated by the Secret Service, she was put on a “No-Fly” list and her stand-up and TV opportunities were canceled.
