Jim Carrey Forcibly Kissing Alicia Silverstone Video Resurfaces Amid Will Smith Criticism
Jim Carrey is being called a hypocrite after saying that Will Smith “should have been” arrested for slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars.
Carrey, 60, told CBS Mornings Gayle King that he was repulsed by Hollywood’s reaction to Will winning Best Actor for his role in King Richard. “I was sickened,” he said. “I was sickened by the standing ovation. I felt like Hollywood is just spineless en masse. It really felt like: ‘Oh, this is really a clear indication that we’re not the cool club anymore.’”
Carrey said he would have “announced this morning that I was suing Will for $200 million because that video is going to be there forever. It’s going to be ubiquitous. That insult is going to last a very long time.”

”I have nothing against Will Smith – he’s done great things, but that was not a good moment,” Carrey added. “It cast a shadow over everyone’s shining moment last night… It was a selfish moment.” Twitter did not miss the shadow that Carrey casted back at the MTV Movie Awards in June 1997, where a video of the actor accepting an award after winning for The Cable Guy forcibly kissed presenter Alicia Silverstone on the lips. Carrey was 35 at the time, while Silverstone was 20. At the time, it was reported that he apologized to a “humiliated” Silverstone backstage.
One tweeter stated, “Jim Carrey says Will Smith ‘should have been’ arrested for hitting Chris Rock How about when Jim Carrey forcibly kissed Alicia Silverstone when he was going up on stage to accept an award?”
Meanwhile, another wrote, “So, 35 year old Jim Carrey forced a kiss on 19 year old Alicia Silverstone in 1997, Alec Baldwin killed a woman, Zoe Kravitz preyed on 14 year old Jaden Smith, Mia Farrow’s ex husband is a pedo & married her adopted daughter, Jodie did whatever, & yet they open their mouths.”
“Oh, because I thought a man who sexually assaulted a woman on stage in front of millions of people had something to say,” wrote another person.
“It had literally no impact on his career whatsoever,” one person stated, with another adding, “Look at her reaction after he did it, she looks SO disgusted!”

Carrey isn’t the only actor to have forced a kiss upon an awards presenter. Per The Independent, in 2003, Adrien Brody kissed a surprised-looking Halle Berry after winning Best Actor for The Pianist. Speaking about the moment in 2017, Berry told Andy Cohen that her initial thought was: “What the f— is happening right now?”
The fact that what Adrien Brody did to Halle Berry still isn't clearly framed as assault is foul. Nothing is funny about this. She deserves better. pic.twitter.com/OG3TOCGqXs

Will has since posted an apology to Chris Rock on his Instagram account. It read: “Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive. My behavior at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally. I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness. I would also like to apologize to the Academy, the producers of the show, all the attendees and everyone watching around the world. I would like to apologize to the Williams Family and my King Richard Family. I deeply regret that my behavior has stained what has been an otherwise gorgeous journey for all of us. I am a work in progress.”
