‘The Defiant Ones’ Is A Dark, Deep Dive Into Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine
HBO is giving you a peek into the background of the raw, lucrative, and intriguing life of Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine – and you can check it out for free.

If you download the HBO Now app, you can get a free trial, and if you’re going to use that free trial for anything, you gotta watch the first episodes of The Defiant Ones, which is a back-story of Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine.
The imagery starts off with multiple artists from Stevie Nicks, to Will.i.Am, to Diddy, and more, and the intro alone will keep you enthralled before the screen titles even run.
The title blocks show news imaging, vintage clips of Snoop Dogg and Tupac, bullet holes, and more. If that’s not enough to keep you interested, you hear some behind-the-scenes stories that include Bruce Springsteen and John Lennon, and recording some of the most iconic songs of all time.
Showing Jimmy’s humble beginnings, working in a record pressing plant to producing a song by Patti Smith, you are blown away, and honestly feel like you could do anything because they did it.
Starting in the second episode, Dr. Dre began the baby steps toward N.W.A. hearing the first bars of Eazy-E, showing classic videos of Eazy-E learning how to rap, and how to develop his flow. Obviously, this series has a lot of swearing, so beware of that.
Though I’m personally only starting the second episode, I know I’m going to be cutting my teeth on all four episodes, and salivating for more. You can’t miss this, especially if you’re a music lover, it doesn’t matter what genre.
