There is a Winter Weather Advisory in effect from 1 p.m. through 7 a.m. Saturday. Mixed precipitation expected.  Snow accumulations of up to one inch and ice accumulations of a light glaze.

Counties affected:

  • South Carolina- Edgefield
  • Georgia- McDuffie, Columbia, Richmond and Burke

Plan on slippery road conditions.  Hazardous conditions could impact the evening commute, into the early morning on Saturday.

If you are on the roadways- USE CAUTION.  Slow down while traveling.

Chance of rain, mostly after 4 p.m.  Cloudy with a high near 40. A 60% chance of precipitation.
Tonight
Rain, snow, freezing rain, and sleet likely, becoming all snow after 10pm, then gradually ending. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 26. North wind around 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. Little or no ice accumulation expected. New snow and sleet accumulation of less than a half inch possible.
Saturday
Sunny, with a high near 43. North wind around 6 mph becoming calm in the afternoon.
Saturday Night
Mostly clear, with a low around 25. Calm wind.
Sunday
Sunny, with a high near 51. Calm wind becoming west 5 to 7 mph in the morning.

Update: 8:00 a.m. 1/21/2022

Chances of rain, mostly after 2 p.m.  Cloudy throughout the day with highs near 40.  Winds around 10 mph.  A 50% chance of precipitation.  Tonight, rain, snow, freezing rain and sleet is likely before 1 a.m.  A chance of freezing rain between 1 and 2 a.m.  Mostly cloudy with lows dipping to the upper 20s. A 60% chance of precipitation.  Little or no ice accumulation is expected.  Saturday, we will see mostly sunny skies with highs in the low 40s.

Update: 1:00 p.m. 1/20/2022

Currently, we have an 80% chance of rain this afternoon with a high of 56. Rain likely throughout the night, with lows around 34.  A rain/snow mix possible tomorrow (Friday) morning with a high of 36.  The lows will drop into the mid-20’s overnight Friday with a small chance of a wintery mix with sleet possible.  Precipitation expected to clear out on Saturday with mostly sunny skies and highs in the low 40’s.

A winter weather advisory is currently in place for parts of the Midlands and Pee Dee in South Carolina starting early Friday morning through Friday night.  Biggest threat is freezing rain.

The National Weather Service shows there is a low probability for widespread hazardous weather.

  • School Closures and Delays

    • Richmond County School System: Out of an abundance of caution, Richmond County Schools will implement their Early Release Schedule beginning at 11:30am tomorrow, Friday, January 21, 2022. The school dismissal schedule is as follows:

      All athletic events, extracurricular activities and practices for Friday have been cancelled. Region basketball games will be rescheduled.

      Due to the inclement weather projections, the Boys and Girls Club, Family Y PrimeTime, and Jessye Norman School of the Arts Afterschool Programs will not operate tomorrow. Augusta Parks and Recreation Loud Crowd Afterschool Program will operate as scheduled.

      One of the RCSS schools has transitioned to Learn@Home instruction due to increased COVID-19 related staff absences. Belair K-8 will transition to the Learn@Home model Friday, January 21, 2022 through Tuesday, January 25, 2022. Students will return for in-person instruction on Wednesday, January 26, 2022. Notification was sent home with students today about Learn@Home instruction.

     

    • Aiken County Public Schools: District Administrators are monitoring weather conditions with updates from the Aiken County Emergency Management.  A final decision will be made prior to end of the school day Thursday (1/20). Update will be made on various platforms.  See more here.

     

    • Washington County Public Schools: Transition to virtual learning on Friday, January 21st and plan to resume in-person learning on Monday, January 24th. Each school will send home information regarding how to participate.  Athletic events are also cancelled.

     

    • Burke County Public Schools: Not reporting to school tomorrow, Thursday, January 20th or Friday, January 21st.  These will be considered work from home days due to weather threats. Details for your child’s schoolwork can be found on the district Distance Learning website and the teacher’s Google classroom.  Basketball games for Burke County High School are still scheduled to be played at home.

     

    • Edgefield County School District: Based on current information, they anticipate a regular, in-person school day. Updates here.

     

    • USC Aiken: Follows the delay and closing determinations of Aiken County Government officials. Currently, USC Aiken will remain open on Friday, but all classes scheduled for Friday will be delivered virtually. At this time there is no change for Saturday’s events, and we are continuing to monitor conditions. More information.

  • Winter Weather Tips

    • If you must drive, drive SLOWLY. Especially if you’ve never driven in icy conditions.
    • Take main roads.  These are usually treated with salt and sand.
    • If you hit an icy patch and start to slide, take your foot off the gas.  Do NOT slam on the brakes.
    • The best thing to do is avoid traveling if road conditions are bad.
    • If a power outage occurs, be prepared with blankets, warm clothes, and socks.
    • Don’t use a generator inside of your home.  This could lead to carbon monoxide poisoning.
    • If you can’t cook inside- use grills OUTSIDE!
