Augusta Habitat for Humanity Honors Jimmy Carter With Memorial Door Display
A moving memorial now sits at the Augusta/CSRA Chapter of Habitat for Humanity. The memorial door pays tribute to Jimmy Carter, who passed away Dec. 29, 2024, at 100 years old. Local artist Leonard “Porkchop” Zimmerman painted a vibrant robot-inspired piece showing the former president at work.
A second bright blue door welcomes visitors to leave their signatures. Both can be seen at the Habitat ReStore on Washington Road.
Bernadette Kelliher, chief executive officer for the local chapter, is planning a special door dedication soon.
“It’s unique. Other people are doing doors, but they are literally framing a door and letting people sign them. As far as I know, we are the only affiliate making it bigger,” Kelliher told Augusta Good News.
The Augusta/CSRA Chapter of Habitat for Humanity has six new home builds planned for 2025, with two builds planned for February.
Together with Rosalynn, his wife and partner in service, Carter helped build 4,447 Habitat homes over three decades. Their commitment sparked a movement – the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project, which drew countless volunteers to build sites across 14 nations.
Several local businesses chipped in with donations to back Augusta’s building plans. The chapter’s Build the Band fundraiser returns June 21, 2025, building on last year’s success.
