USC Gets Green Light for Williams-Brice Stadium Overhaul, Doubling Suite Capacity
South Carolina officials gave the University of South Carolina the thumbs up for their ambitious plans to upgrade Williams-Brice Stadium. The renovation will double the number of suites from 18 to 36.
“This will be a transformational project that will elevate and amplify our national profile and serve as a point of pride for the university,” USC Director of Athletics Jeremiah Donati said in a news release. “Once complete, the stadium project will generate new revenue streams that will help provide a sustainable future for all of our Gamecock athletics programs and offer our fans and donors with a first-class game day experience.”
The State Legislature’s Joint Bond Review Committee and State Fiscal Accountability Authority approved the start of Phase 1. The first round of work focuses on the stadium’s west side by adding premium club seating and luxury boxes, along with improving the north end student section.
The stadium’s new design comes from Populous, the team behind Las Vegas’ eye-catching Sphere venue, and thousands of sports venues worldwide. The west stands’ 100 and 200 levels will see major updates including new bathrooms, concessions, and upscale club spaces.
“We were fortunate to have had several highly qualified international, national and state design firms express interest in the project and after deliberate consideration, we came to the conclusion that for such a monumental project that will transform the University of South Carolina, we needed the most experienced firm whose breadth of work speaks for itself and whose vision aligns with the scope of our project,” added Donati. “Populous is known for its innovative and customized approach and it will be an excellent partner for the University of South Carolina.”
