Megan Thee Stallion is continuing to prove that she is the number one rapper to look out for when it comes to dominating the charts. Hot girl Meg is ensuring all her Hotties are going to have a(nother) Hot girl summer with her latest track, “BOA,” she dropped Friday (May 10).

In Stallion’s heavily influenced popular video games track, the Grammy-winning artist features many pop culture nods for beloved games like Tekken, Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Snake, and Dance Dance Revolution. She has been teasing the track ahead of its release with fun video game concept art. Making more references to beloved movies like Jumanji and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, the hip-hop queen sure knows how to keep her fans entertained with her visuals.

Seconds after the track drops, we can hear Gwen Stefani‘s iconic voice singing, “La, la, la, la, la, la, la.” Meg sampled Stefani’s 2004 Love. Angel. Music. Baby. hit, “What You Waiting For?” More lines from Stefani’s song include looped vocals of her singing, “tick, tock, tick, tock,” and “oh, oh, oh.”

Throughout the song, Megan calls out someone who’s only relevant because they post dances on TikTok, calling them out and saying their time is up. Fans on social media believe she is shading Nicki Minaj, with one person commenting on Meg’s Instagram post, “She got the anime fans and still making subtle disses at Nicki lol.”

Reacting on Meg’s social media post using the Gwen Stefani sample, one person on Instagram wrote, “THE GWEN STEFANI SAMPLE! [crying emoji] ♥️ YOU ARE SO BEYOND!!!.”

Over on X (formerly Twitter), one fan noted Meg’s nod to Gwen, writing: “The album was Gwen’s first as a solo act, like how Megan’s upcoming project is her first studio album as an independent artist.” A second fan noted Meg’s love of Japanese culture: “sampling What You Waiting For makes so much sense cause Gwen Stefani was the queen of borrowing from Japanese pop culture and hip-hop trends, now one of the most prominent modern hip-hop artists is sampling Gwen while also being obsessed with Japan herself.”

Gwen Stefani was born on October 3, 1969, named after a stewardess in the 1968 novel Airport. The singer-songwriter dropped out of California State University in 1987 to pursue a music career. Before she dropped out of college, her brother Eric asked her to be the vocalist of the ska band No Doubt. With the rise in popularity of grunge music at the time, the band didn’t see mainstream success until their third album in 1995, Tragic Kingdom, which featured hits like “Don’t Speak,” “Just a Girl,” and “Spiderwebs.” At this time, Stefani also began working outside of the band. She collaborated with rapper/ singer Eve and was featured on her song “Let Me Blow Ya Mind.”

Gwen’s Solo Career

During the band’s hiatus, Stefani embarked on a solo pop career in 2004 by releasing her debut studio album Love. Angel. Music. Baby. “Rich Girl” was released as the album’s second single as her second collaboration with Eve, and produced by Dr. Dre.
