Are you interested in learning about public safety, and how each department operates? The Aiken Department of Public Safety is getting ready to kick off its Citizen's Academy soon. This is part of the department's initiative to educate the community. The Citizen's Academy is a series of classes over the course of 9 weeks. These classes will help participants gain a deeper understanding of various aspects of public safety. The next class session will kick off on Thursday, February 1, 2024. Applications are due on Monday, January 22, 2024.
Citizen's Academy
The Aiken Department of Public Safety's Citizen's Academy is a nine-week program. Classes are held each Thursday from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Each class covers a different topic and is taught by members of the public safety profession. Throughout the training, participants will learn about topics like basic patrol functions, firefighting, use of force, community policing, traffic safety, criminal investigations, and more.
It's important to note that the Citizen's Academy serves as an overview of the Aiken Department of Public Safety's functions and operations. This isn't training for official positions in law enforcement or firefighting.
If you'd like to apply for the Citizen's Academy, you can get an application at the Public Safety Headquarters at 834 Beaufort Street NE in Aiken. Applications are also available online HERE. For more information, contact Cpt. Aaron Dobbs at (803)644-1905 or email him at adobbs@cityofaikensc.gov.
More Community Engagement
The Aiken Department of Public Safety also hosts events to engage with the community in various ways. Coming up on Friday, January 26th, they are hosting Pickleball With A Cop at Odell Weeks Activity Center from 1 p.m. - 5 p.m. This is a time to have some fun and connect with your local public safety personnel. Whether you have pickleball experience or not, you're invited to join for a fun afternoon.
Also, January is National Human Trafficking Prevention Month. And the Aiken Department of Public Safety is using its social media to educate the community on warning signs to watch for.
7 Crazy South Carolina Laws
Recently, we took a look at 7 Georgia laws that are a bit out there. And now it's time to check out these 7 crazy South Carolina laws. As we all know, laws are created for various reasons. And they vary around the country. But it's amazing to see that some states have created what seem like the most random laws. You have to wonder where these even came from. What happened to make them say, "Yes, we need to create a law to keep people from putting their horse in a bathtub"?
The website Only In Your State has lists and fun facts for all the states. And when it comes to crazy laws, they've compiled lists for each state. In South Carolina, there are actually 16 on their list. But for today, we're going to share the 7 craziest ones!
Just like with Georgia, there isn't really a back story for the laws. Also, the chances of being prosecuted for these are pretty slim to none (like the tattoo one...). So let's get to it with the 7 crazy South Carolina laws!
Tattoos Are Illegal
Yep, it says it's an "offense to get a tattoo." To clarify: tattoos are legal in South Carolina now, but the law is still on the books!

Get A Permit If You Want To Fire A Missile!
This makes sense... because it could be dangerous. It's best to let someone know you're going to fire a missile. But honestly, who's out here just randomly firing missiles in South Carolina that they had to make this a law?

Don't Urinate In The Waters

Changing Clothes At A Gas Station?
Apparently, you may not change clothes in a gas station without permission. If they mean just in the store... that's understandable. But if it's in the bathroom, why would you need permission?

Horses Wearing Pants
Um... have you ever seen a horse wear pants? This law literally says, "Horses are to wear pants at all times." This one makes absolutely no sense, and you have to wonder where the idea even came from!
