Rap superstar Eminem celebrated another year sober with a simple post of his hand holding a 16 year sobriety chip. Em posted the pic, perhaps a little ironically, on the popular marijuana celebration day: 4/20. Eminem’s relationship with drugs has been heavily referenced in his music ever since his first commercial release: “The Slim Shady LP.”
Eminem, whose birth name is Marshall Mathers III, previously revealed that he decided to get sober after a near-fatal overdose in 2007. His relationship with drugs has been widely documented, mostly by himself. The overdose, it would seem, was referenced in a song called “Castle” from his 2017 ‘Revival’ album:
“And if things should worsen, don’t take this letter I wrote
As a goodbye note, ’cause your dad’s at the end of his rope
I’m sliding down a slippery slope
Anyways sweetie, I better go
I’m getting sleepy
Love, Dad, s***, I don’t know”
He went on to explain in a 2017 Men’s Journal interview how he replaced his addiction with another: exercise. It must have worked because the multi-platinum, Grammy-winning, Oscar-winning rapper is proudly celebrating year number 16.
Celebrities and addiction, unfortunately, is not an uncommon story. However, the good news is that recovery and sobriety are on the rise. Non-alcoholic drink sales went up by over 20% from 2021 to 2022. Young people are leading the trend, preferring productivity and a general sense of well-being over drinking alcohol. Gen Z spends about 40% less on alcohol than Millennials.
While sobriety is becoming more and more popular, some are choosing to not abstain totally. Many are instead choosing the “Sober Curious” lifestyle. This is a way of being able to enjoy alcohol consumption a little more responsibly, staying mindful of the effects that alcohol has on your mind and body.
With sobriety becoming more and more mainstream, Eminem isn’t the only celebrity who has decided to clean out his liquor closet.
