Georgia Haunted House Celebrates 28 Years of Thrills
One Georgia haunted house is celebrating its 28th year in 2024, and it’s already open and ready to help you get your scare on. One of the most popular activities in the fall, of course, is going to a haunted house. So, if you’re in the mood to get scared, make note of this haunted house that’s celebrating a milestone.
Georgia Haunted House Turns 28
Before we get to the special Georgia haunted house, note that the haunted house has a rich history. According to the Smithsonian Magazine, “The origins of the haunted house date back to 19th-century London, when a series of illusions and attractions introduced the public to new forms of gruesome entertainment. In 1802, Marie Tussaud scandalized British audiences with an exhibition of wax sculptures of decapitated French figures, including King Louis XVI, Marie Antoinette, Marat and Robespierre.” If you’re looking for a simple, basic definition of a haunted house, “A haunted house is a house where supernatural events are believed to take place. Many haunted houses are believed to contain ghosts.”
Haunted attractions are a big business. According to the experts at America Haunts, more than 1,200 haunted attractions exist that charge admission fees to their events. “We additionally estimate that there are over 300 amusement facilities producing some sort of Halloween or Haunted House event such as an amusement park or family fun center,” they add. “Lastly there are over 3,000 charity attractions that open for one day on Halloween or one or two weekends in October produced by a local charity group.”
As for the Georgia haunted house that’s turning 28, it’s Netherworld, located at 1313 Netherworld Way in Stone Mountain. Netherworld Haunted House is one of Atlanta’s longest-running immersive experiences, according to the attraction, and they opened back up for the season on Sept. 20. Expect “more creepy creatures, terrifying monsters and frightful fun this scary season,” the haunt promises. The attraction features two new special haunts: Wake the Dead and Mr. Grendel’s Birthday Party of Horrors. “After completing each haunt, guests will arrive at the festival-styled Midway, packed with games galore, roaming monsters, food trucks and more,” the haunt states. “Haunt-goers can also experience more fun at Netherworld’s House of Creeps monster museum or five epic escape rooms at Escape the Netherworld.” I think it’s so great to see this Georgia haunt passing a milestone. The haunt is open now through Nov. 9, so you have plenty of time to get haunted before the season ends.
