Ewan McGregor Used An Intimacy Coordinator With His Wife

Ewan McGregor finds it "still necessary" to use an intimacy coordinator for sex scenes with his wife, Mary Elizabeth Winstead. The two actors, who have been married for two years and share a one-year-old son named Laurie, star in a new drama series called A Gentleman in Moscow.

The Fargo alum said in a recent interview that he and his wife use an intimacy coordinator for the sake of the crew. As many actors have stated before him, McGregor says, "It's odd to be naked in front of people. It’s odd to be intimate in front of the camera."

The 52-year-old actor gave an example for those who don't understand the importance. "If you were doing a dance scene, you’d have a choreographer." Just like a choreographer, an intimacy coordinator is the middle person that the director and actors meet to ensure a scene is done perfectly.

The role of the intimacy coordinator is to support the actor in any intimate action on set and make sure their boundaries aren’t being crossed. They often plan, choreograph and oversee scenes with intimacy, nudity, and simulated sex in film and television.

McGregor, who has four daughters from his previous marriage to Eve Mavrakis, believes the gaining popularity of intimacy coordinators over the years is a good thing. His 22-year-old daughter Esther might feel pressured to perform a naked scene to advance her career, but five years later, regret that choice for being "unnecessary." Ewan adds, "Now, there’s somebody she talks to whose career doesn’t rest on the shoulders of this person." The father-daughter duo starred together in Disney+'s Obi-Wan Kenobi.

In the new Paramount+ series, based on the best-selling novel of the same name, McGregor plays Count Alexander Rostov, while Winstead plays actress Anna Urbanova. A Gentleman in Moscow follows a Russian aristocrat who is placed under house arrest while the Bolshevik Revolution plays out before him. The show will be streaming on Friday, March 29th. For some actors, signing on to projects and immersing themselves in their characters is enough for them, When the shoot is over,  they move on to the next project. So, they don't feel the need to watch their own work. After months of filming for a movie or television series, the thought of watching themselves on screen isn't of interest. Production of films and television shows seems to be never-ending, with projects being filmed and released back to back. For some actors, they have just finished a role and jump right into another one without any breaks. There are even times when an actor has signed on for projects that overlap, splitting their time between sets, simultaneously switching between multiple characters. With critics and audiences alike throwing in their two cents about everything after the release, that adds to the self-consciousness actors face.
