Confession time! I only made it to the gym 2 days last week. Yikes!  That means I only did my pull-up challenge twice as well.  But, I told myself over the weekend that this week, I’m back at it– no excuses!  So far… I’m 2 days in, now just to make it the rest of the week! Conveniently, I came across this study from BarBend.  They looked at Google data to determine the most popular gym exercises in each state.

Before we get to the top 6 most popular exercises overall, let’s look at Georgia and South Carolina!

Interestingly, crunches were the most popular in both Georgia and South Carolina.  Which I find interesting, mainly because crunches aren’t just a gym exercise.  You can do crunches just about anywhere.  If someone were to ask my favorite gym exercise… it wouldn’t be crunches.

Honestly, my favorite gym exercises are either bicep exercises… because I really want to build my arms. Or, squats.  I’ve always loved leg day for some reason.  Although right now, my leg days have been a struggle!  I feel like I’ve gone backward and had to start over too many times!  But a lot of that is on me, for missing too many leg days (which are typically Wednesday for me).  My plan is to start incorporating 2 leg days from now on though.

And if you’re just getting started on a fitness journey, check out what this spokesperson for BarBend has to say:

“When starting off at the gym is important to determine our goals or needs and decide which parts of our body we need (or want) to target the most.”

Also, in their research, BarBend found that different states are interested in different types of exercise, which they believe may be dictated by the local gym culture.

When it comes to the most popular gym exercises in each state, these exercises are the top 6 most popular:

  • 6. Lateral Raise

Lateral raises are good for strengthening the shoulders and building upper body strength.  It was the most popular exercise in the state of Nebraska, with an average Google search volume of 880 searches per month.

  • 5. Squats

One of my favorites!  It’s so good for building lower body strength. This is also good for posture, core, and helps prevent knee and ankle injuries.  Utah is the only state where this is the most popular exercise!

  • 4. Bench Press

Bench presses are good for upper-body strength and chest muscle, but some experts say they aren’t for everyone, and you can train the same muscles with barbell floor or overhead press, push-ups, or dumbbell bench press.

  • 3. Hammer Curl

Six out of the 50 states search hammer curls the most.  It’s good for bicep strength, along with grip and wrist strength.  I like to do a variety of curls to target different parts of my biceps.

  • 2. Deadlift

Deadlifts are tough! They can help reduce lower back pain by building strength in your back and core.  BUT, they can also cause pain if done incorrectly, which may be why so many people were searching them to make them the second most popular exercise!  You can do deadlifts with a barbell, kettle bell or dumbbells.

  • 1. Crunches

For me, ab workouts are a love-hate relationship!  It can take forever to see results… but there’s also the risk of bulking up the muscles too much, which will make you look thicker too.  And if you have fat to lose, it’s harder to see your progress too.  But, crunches made the number one spot on the list. According to the BarBend article, crunches can help improve not only core strength, but your posture, mobility, and flexibility.
