Augusta Utilities will drain a 7-mile stretch of the Augusta Canal beginning Jan. 11. The closure will run from the Savannah Rapids Pavilion headgates to 13th Street.
The waterway must be drained so crews can reach canal structures and the raw water pump station safely. Crews will also remove trees and debris to clear paths for equipment and personnel.
The towpath and the Lake Olmstead trailhead bridge may have temporary closures during the canal maintenenace. Trail users should expect limited access to their waling and biking routes.
This maintenance keeps the historic waterway running. Draining lets the utility inspect and service equipment that sits below the normal water line.
Utility officials haven't announced specific dates but work is expected to continue for multiple weeks.
