The Salvation Army of Aiken kicked off its 97th Red Kettle Campaign with a competition between the city and county to raise $135,000 by Christmas Eve at 2 p.m. More than 100 volunteers took part in the first Battle of the Bells to support shelter and meal programs as winter temperatures drop.

Donations have already surpassed half the goal. Aiken County contributed a substantial chunk of that amount.

What started almost 70 years ago as a work program for 15 men has transformed into something much bigger.

"That's now morphed into a 44-bed facility. However, during the cold winter months like we're in now, we pull out additional cots, and we can get upwards of 60 to 70 individuals in our facility," said Michael Good, captain of The Salvation Army of Aiken, according to WRDW.

County workers and administrators jumped into the fundraising effort because donations stay local. Brian Sanders, Aiken County administrator, said residents can witness where their money goes.

The Salvation Army of Aiken is closing in one their goal, but it could use your help through donations and volunteers. More information can be found on the website and online donations can be made through the Virtual Red Kettle page.
