On Aug. 8, 2004, a tour bus belonging to Dave Matthews dumped an estimated 800 pounds worth of sewage on a sightseeing boat carrying an unfortunate group of Chicago tourists crossing under the Kinzie Street Bridge in Chicago.   • 1969: The Beatles posed for their Abbey Road album cover on the crosswalk outside EMI Studios on Abbey Road in London. It became one of the most recognizable album covers in music history.
  • 1987: U2's single "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" reached No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart. The music video was filmed in Las Vegas, where they opened a residency shortly after.
  • 1988: N.W.A released Straight Outta Compton, a genre-bending rap album that propelled West Coast hip-hop into the mainstream. It peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 chart and reached Platinum status.
  • 1992: Madonna's single "This Used To Be My Playground" hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. This track is the theme song for the film A League of Their Own.
  • 2020: Taylor Swift's album folklore and its lead single "cardigan" both debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard charts, making her the first artist to open atop both charts in the same week. This was Swift's seventh album to reach the top spot on the Billboard 200, solidifying her dominance in pop music.
  • 2022: Beyonce's song "Break My Soul" topped the Billboard Hot 100. It was her first chart-topping single in 14 years.

Notable Recordings and Performances

Live performances are the backbone of the music industry. Noteworthy events on Aug. 8 in past years include:

  • 1981: MTV broadcast its first stereo concert, just one week after the channel's nationwide launch. The show featured REO Speedwagon performing live in Denver, Colorado.
  • 2024: Organizers canceled Taylor Swift's Eras Tour shows in Vienna, Austria, after plans for an attack were uncovered. The first show was scheduled for Aug. 8.

Industry Changes and Challenges

There is no shortage of challenges facing artists in the music industry, as these Aug. 8 events show:

  • 1966: The South African Broadcasting Corporation banned the playing of Beatles music due to Lennon's comments about The Beatles being "more popular than Jesus."
  • 2007: Amy Winehouse experienced a drug overdose, leading to the cancellation of her first U.S. tour. Winehouse refused rehab following the incident, which ultimately inspired her hit song "Rehab."
