Many Americans want to cut their carbon footprint and save money on gas, but it turns out, buying an electric vehicle isn’t the greenest way to go. According to a new report from the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy (ACEEE), the greenest car on the market is actually a plug-in hybrid (PHEV).
- The ACEEE is a non-profit that works to develop “transformative policies to reduce energy waste and combat climate change.”
- Every year, they come out with an assessment of the real-world environmental impact of “every new model in the U.S. light-duty vehicle market.”
- Their ratings are based on the vehicle’s impact through its entire lifecycle, from the emissions from fuel burned in the engine to emissions generated by electricity it uses, as well as emissions produced when mining and processing minerals for batteries and emissions from manufacturing vehicles.
- Each vehicle is given a green score reflecting how green it is.
- In 2024, the greenest new car you can buy is a plug-in hybrid Toyota Prius.
- It beats every electric vehicle (EV) on the market thanks to its smaller battery and light weight.
