How Dua Lipa made her single for Barbie is pretty cool. Barbie’s projected to hit $1 Billion at the global box office. With a fire movie comes a fire soundtrack. Not only does Dua play the role of Mermaid Barbie, but her single “Dance The Night” plays throughout the entire movie. She also has a really funny part with a “Merman” whose name I won’t reveal. The fact that he plays the ukulele makes the scene even more hysterical. The entire movie is perfect from beginning to end. There’s plenty of humor, lots of spectacle, a little suspense, and a life lesson. When you’ve filmed the perfect movie, what’s next? Finding the perfect music. Dua Lipa shared how some of that process works.
Greta Gerwig’s Song Process
Barbie director Greta Gerwig recently shared how this process works. She used Billy Eilish as an example. Her single from Barbie is called “What Was I Made For?” Greta said that she sent the 7-time Grammy Award-winning artist about 30 minutes of footage from the movie. She gave Billie a little bit of direction and a week later, Barbie’s “Heart Song” was written. It looks like Dua Lipa went through a very similar process. She recently posted how a little bit of that process went.
Dua Lipa Creates Her Single
I didn’t even consider that a director sends clips for potential artists to watch so they can come up with a song. Dua was creating solely off of a little bit of dialogue and the dance timing of one of the early scenes at Barbie’s Dreamhouse. It’s really cool to watch how a song for a movie comes about. In the video below Dua Lipa is watching the scene with part of the music from Dance The Night while sort of mumbling some lyrics to make sure it matches.
