Amy Schumer attends the 75th Annual Writers Guild Awards at The Edison Ballroom on March 05, 2023 in New York City.

Amy Schumer would have been the lead for Barbie, had it not been for some pesky shoes. After a new trailer and more images of the cast were released this week, Schumer’s interview about why she turned down the role of Barbie has resurfaced.

The comedian addressed why she opted not to star in Sony’s live-action movie with The Hollywood Reporter last month. At the time, Sony’s version was described as a “fish-out-of-water tale about a woman who gets kicked out of Barbieland for not being perfect enough.”

Four months later, Schumer announced she was dropping out, citing “scheduling conflicts.” She pointed out that “they definitely didn’t want to do it the way I wanted to do it, the only way I was interested in doing it.” Schumer’s plan for Barbie was to be an ambitious inventor. She noted that the studio asked that her invention be a high heel made of Jell-O. When Sony sent her a pair of Manolo Blahniks to celebrate, that’s when she knew she was out. “The idea that that’s just what every woman must want, right there, I should have gone, ‘You’ve got the wrong gal.’”
