Childhood pranks were the best. Being a 90s kid that grew up in the south, we’d stay outside until the street lights came on or heard a parent yell that it was time for dinner. The funny thing was, it didn’t matter what part of the neighborhood I was in. I could always distinctly hear the sound of my Mom’s voice from the front or back porch. My friends and I were always jumping bike ramps, climbing trees, playing in the woods or creek, and just as the sun was about to fully set and before we knew the street lights were coming on we’d play ding-dong ditch. I knew it as “Ring and Run.” We’d mostly only do it to houses of people one of us knew, but occasionally we’d ring the doorbell of a stranger’s house. It was especially fun this time of year because it started to feel spooky outside.
I haven’t thought about this childhood prank until today. I came across a viral video of a kid who’s about to ding-dong ditch a house. The timing was not on his side. The guy that lives there happened to be opening the door and leaving. The homeowner asked what he was doing and the kid came completely clean and even said that if he didn’t ring the doorbell, his ride would make him walk home. To the kid’s surprise, the homeowner offered a way to one-up the prank by “chasing” him through the yard. All of this was caught on the homeowner’s Ring Doorbell cam.
