That Bernie Sanders Meme Raised Almost 2 Million Dollars For Charity
Some were laughing with Bernie, and some were laughing at him. Either way he turned it into profit for charity!
By now we’ve seen the viral meme of Bernie Sanders and his mittens just about everywhere. Typically memes like this burn out quickly on the internet, but the Senator from Vermont knows a little bit about how viral culture works.
This particular meme not only generated laughs, it generated a demand for merchandise. Members of Bernie’s team quickly added t-shirts and sweatshirts with the Senator’s famous bundled-up pose on the front to his site and they sold out within minutes!
The proceeds will go to several charities in Vermont, one main one being Meals on Wheels. Bernie Sanders said, “[We] were amazed by all the creativity shown by so many people over the last week, and we’re glad we can use my internet fame to help Vermonters in need.”
The Senator added that $1.8 million is nowhere near what is needed in the midst of a pandemic, but his generosity certainly goes a long way for his state.
