Salt-n-Pepa Biopic: Egypt Criss Auditioned to Play Her Mother, Pepa, But Didn’t Get the Role
As we previously reported, Lifetime is bringing forth a Salt-n-Pepa biopic, and Egypt Criss auditioned to play her mother Sandra “Pepa” Denton. However, she didn’t get the role.
Back in December of 2019, the mother-and-daughter duo sat down with the hosts of The Real and discussed Criss’ audition. “Let me tell you the funny thing,” Pepa said. “When I was prepping her to play me, I was like practicing with her…When she went for the audition–because you know I’m going to let her do the whole process–she came back out like, ‘Mom everything you taught me was wrong.'”
The reality star also said that what the casting directors wanted from the audition “was the opposite” of what Pepa had told her. “I was like, ‘They [the casting team] didn’t want it like that,’ it was the opposite,” Criss said. Nevertheless, Criss will still make an appearance in the film but as a different role than her mother, as Shadow and Act reports.
Laila Odom will portray Pepa while G. G. Townson plays Salt ( Cheryl James). The biopic is directed by Mario Van Peebles and it has Abdul Williams as the screenwriter. Denton and James are both executive producing the film, which will air on Lifetime later in 2020.
