Miley Cyrus on Marriage to Liam Hemsworth: I’m a ‘Queer Person’ in a ‘Hetero Relationship’
Miley Cyrus wants to make it clear that her marriage to actor Liam Hemsworth is no old-fashioned relationship.
In a new interview with Vanity Fair, Miley Cyrus, 26, says despite the fact that she’s in a heterosexual marriage, she is still very clear about her identity as a queer person.
“We’re redefining, to be f–king frank, what it looks like for someone that’s a queer person like myself to be in a hetero relationship,” Cyrus told Vanity Fair. “A big part of my pride and my identity is being a queer person.”
“What I’m in love with exists on almost a spiritual level,” she added. “It has nothing to do with sexuality. Relationships and partnerships in a new generation — I don’t think they have so much to do with sexuality or gender. Sex is actually a small part, and gender is a very small, almost irrelevant part of relationships.”
Cyrus married Hemsworth, 29, on December 23, 2018. The former Hannah Montana star also revealed that she is not sure if they would have gotten married had they not lost their home in the California wildfires.
“I’m not sure without losing Malibu, we would’ve been ready to take this step or ever gotten married, who can say?” she said. “But the timing felt right and I go with my heart. No one is promised the next day, or the next, so I try to be ‘in the now’ as much as possible.”
“My relationship is very special to me, it is my ‘home,'” she said. “I feel less misplaced when we are in the same room, no matter where that is, but just because something changes in my relationship doesn’t mean something has to drastically change in my individuality. What Liam and I went through together changed us.”
