Netflix gives traditional a twist!
Any romantic comedy movie fan knows how it goes. The meet-cute, or the cute first meeting, introduces the characters of the movie, who are then pushed together by events, friends and family members, and eventually fall in love. One of Netflix’s newest movies, Set It Up, is just a little different.
Harper and Charlie, portrayed by Zoey Deutch and Glen Powell, are two over-worked assistants who decide that setting their bosses up on a date would make both their lives easier. They orchestrate a meeting for the two bosses, portrayed by Lucy Liu and Taye Diggs, perfectly playing into every predictable rom-com storyline.
While the movie itself is predictable in every which way and ranks at a 6.6 out of 10 stars on IMDb, it perfectly captures the feel of being a 20-something trying to break into the working world.
This is the second movie Deutch and Powell have worked on together, and their chemistry is playful, but realistic. Though it lacks the fast pace tempo of an action movie, or the wild plot of a comedy, it perfectly captures the mushy plot of a romantic story, with a few jokes thrown in. Though there’s a little bit of drinking and mature language, it might not be suitable for younger audiences, but keeps the rather ridiculous lives of both assistants’ entertaining.
If you’re looking for a movie that’ll make you think, it’d be best to steer clear of Netflix’s romantic comedy section. However, if you don’t mind a feel-good story with a slightly inaccurate idea of what it’s like to live in New York, Set It Up might just be the perfect movie for you.
